EIS IJS ICE was actually produced several years ago. Nearly every
song was spontaneously composed with little forethought, but as the ideas
occurred while playing the various parts . In fact, most of the tracks were
first takes.
It features my personal favorite of all guitars, the Gittler,
designed and manufactured by jazz guitarist
Avraham Bar Rashi (formerly Alan Gittler). I also used a Yamaha portable
keyboard (early eighties vintage) and a C.P. Thornton 5-string bass guitar. For
effects, I used two Digitech delays with sampling and sound-on-sound
capabilities, a DOD wah pedal, an Electro-Harmonix treble booster, as well as
various pieces of steel and aluminum junk struck with steel and aluminum rods.
The basic concept was to create offset rythmic forms without real
synchronization (in the sense of that generated by drum machines), using only
the loops' repetitions to form the rythmic basis of the songs.
During the entire time that I was working on this project, for some
reason, I kept thinking about arctic landscapes, snow, wind, ice and darkness
of arctic winter. These wintery thoughts have have been present in my thoughts
for years.
The cover photo was provided by nature photographer Curt N. Sayers.
